Another Body Found on Property of South Carolina Murder, Kidnapping Suspect, Cops Say
Investigators found another body today buried at the South Carolina property where a woman was found chained in a metal container, Spartanburg officials said tonight.
Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said human remains were uncovered in one of the two places that Todd Kohlhepp pointed out as gravesites. He said they have not yet identified the remains or cause of death, and the search for more remains will continue Monday.
The investigation is expanding to other properties Kohlhepp currently owns or used to own, and those properties are not limited to South Carolina, the sheriff said. He added that the FBI and Department of Homeland Security are also involved in the investigation.
Kohlhepp, who allegedly confessed to killing four people 13 years ago in a South Carolina town, after being charged with the kidnapping of the woman who was found chained at the neck in a storage container, was denied bond today in a South Carolina court.
Officials said Saturday that Kohlhepp claimed responsibility for the murders at a motorcycle shop in 2003. He appeared before a magistrate judge in Spartanburg wearing an orange jumpsuit, and declined to speak when the judge offered him the chance to make a statement. He doesn't have an attorney.
After Kohlhepp was denied bond, Magistrate Judge Jimmy Henson said a circuit court could revisit the issue of bond later.
Kohlhepp was charged with four counts of murder in the 2003 killings, after being charged with the kidnapping of a woman who was held captive on his property. It's possible that the number of charges against Kohlhepp will increase as police investigate his other alleged confessions, prosecutors said.
A Spartanburg County Sheriff's investigative report says Kohlhepp "confessed to investigators that he shot and killed" the owner, service manager, mechanic and bookkeeper of Superbike Motorsports, a high-performance motorcycle shop in Chesnee, South Carolina. "Kohlhepp gave details ... that only the killer would know," the report says.
Earlier this morning, two relatives of victims from the 2003 murders at spoke to the media, expressing a range of emotions, including relief that a suspect had finally been detained.
Terry Guy, who spoke outside of the Spartanburg County jail on his way to the hearing, said he suffered depression in the wake of losing a loved one at the time the crimes took place.
"I lost 70 pounds," he said.
Regarding his feelings after learning the identity of the killer, Guy said that he was relieved, but also sympathetic for Kohlhepp's family.
"My emotions are running from joy to crying, even feeling sorry for the family [of killer] I feel for them," he said.
He also said that he would like "to pray" with Kohlhepp, but added that he expected justice to be served in the case.
"The gentleman has to pay for what he did," he said.
Tom and Lorraine Lucas, who lost their son, Brian, in the quadruple murder, also spoke to the press outside of the courthouse.
"We want to see the face. I want to look at him, and I want to try to use that in healing," Tom Lucas said, regarding Kohlhepp.
Kohlhepp had a criminal record that preceded his arrest on Saturday.
According to South Carolina's sex offender registry, he was required to register as a sex offender in the state after he was convicted of a kidnapping in Arizona in 1987.
According to court documents obtained by ABC News, Kohlhepp was arrested when he was 15 years old for allegedly kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl when he was living with his father in Arizona in 1987. Kohlhepp allegedly went to the girl's house, threatened her with a blue steel revolver and forced her to come to his home where he tied her up and taped her mouth shut before raping her. He then walked her back to her house and threatened to kill her family if she told anyone.
The girl called police to report the incident with Kohlhepp, whom she said she knew as "Todd Sampsell," using his father's last name, according to court documents.
Kohlhepp admitted his guilt to police and told authorities he did it because he was enraged at his father, who divorced from his mother when he was about a year old, according to the documents. Kohlhepp told police he was born in Florida, raised in Georgia and moved around a lot. He eventually became a resident in South Carolina where his mother -- identified in court documents as Regina Kohlhepp -- lived.
Kohlhepp's case was moved from juvenile to adult court. The judge who moved his case described Kohlhepp as "very bright and should be advanced academically," but said he is "behaviorally and emotionally dangerous."
"At less than the age of 9, this juvenile was impulsive, explosive, and preoccupied with sexual content. He has not changed. He has been unabatedly aggressive to others and destructive of property since nursery school. He destroys his own clothing, personal possessions and pets apparently on whim and caprice," the judge wrote.
Kohlhepp pleaded guilty, providing that the sexual assault charge be dismissed. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison, and was required to register as a sex offender.
Iraq peshmerga attack Islamic State town as army battles in Mosul
BASHIQA, Iraq (Reuters) - Iraqi Kurdish peshmerga forces attacked an Islamic State-held town northeast of Mosul on Monday, trying to clear a pocket of militants outside the city while Iraqi troops wage a fierce urban war with the jihadists in its eastern neighborhoods.
As the campaign against Islamic State's Iraqi stronghold entered its fourth week, fighters across the border launched an offensive in the Syrian half of the jihadist group's self-declared caliphate, targeting its base in the city of Raqqa.
The assault on Raqqa, held by Islamic State for nearly three years, will be spearheaded by armed groups backed by the United States and supported by U.S.-led air strikes. Unlike in Iraq where the army is leading the assault, however, it not being coordinated with President Bashar al-Assad or the Syrian army.
In Bashiqa, some 15 km (10 miles) from Mosul, the first waves of a 2,000-strong peshmerga force entered the town on foot and in armored vehicles or Humvees.
Artillery earlier pounded the town, which lies on the Nineveh plains at the foot of a mountain.
"Our aim is to take control and clear out all the Daesh (Islamic State) militants," Lieutenant-Colonel Safeen Rasoul told Reuters. "Our estimates are there are about 100 still left and 10 suicide cars."
Islamic State fighters have sought to slow the offensive on their Mosul stronghold with waves of suicide car bomb attacks. Iraqi commanders say there have been 100 on the eastern front and 140 in the south.
A top Kurdish official told Reuters on Sunday the jihadists had also deployed drones strapped with explosives, long-range artillery shells filled with chlorine gas and mustard gas and trained snipers.
As a peshmerga column moved into Bashiqa on Monday, a loud explosion rocked the convoy, and two large plumes of white smoke could be seen just 50 feet (15 meters) away. A peshmerga officer said two suicide car bombs had tried to hit the advancing force.
"They are surrounded... If they want to surrender, OK. If they don't, they will be killed," said Lieutenant-Colonel Qandeel Mahmoud, standing next to a Humvee, supported by a cane he said he has needed since he was wounded in the leg by two suicide car bombers four months ago.
In eastern districts of Mosul, which Iraqi special forces broke into last week, officers say jihadists melted into the population, ambushing and isolating troops in what the special forces spokesman called the world's "toughest urban warfare".
TWIN OFFENSIVES
Mosul, the largest Islamic State-controlled city in either Iraq or Syria, has been held by the group since its fighters drove the army out of northern Iraq in June 2014.
The Mosul campaign, the most complex military operation in Iraq in a decade, brings together a force of around 100,000 soldiers, security forces, Shi'ite militias and peshmerga, backed by a U.S.-led coalition, to crush the Sunni jihadists.
Across the border, U.S.-backed Syrian fighters have launched their own campaign, called Euphrates Anger, to recapture Raqqa.
Twin offensives on Raqqa and Mosul could bring to an end the self-styled caliphate declared by Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi from the pulpit of a Mosul mosque in 2014.
Baghdadi, whose whereabouts are unknown but who is believed to be in northern Iraq close to the Syrian border, has told his followers there can be no retreat in a "total war" with their enemies.
The militants in Mosul have been waging a fierce and brutal defense, although they have lost ground on all fronts outside the city itself.
To the south of Mosul, security forces said they had recaptured and secured the town of Hammam al-Alil from Islamic State fighters, who they said had kept thousands of residents as human shields as well as marching many others alongside retreating militants towards Mosul as cover from air strikes.
The security forces on the southern front have continued their advance, reaching within 4 km (2-1/2 miles) of Mosul's airport, on the southern edge of the city and on the western bank of the Tigris River which runs through its center.
To the north, a military statement said the army's Sixteenth Infantry Division had also recaptured the village of Bawiza and entered another area, Sada, on the city's northern limits, further tightening the circle of forces around Islamic State.
Shi'ite militias known as Popular Mobilisation forces are also fighting to the west of Mosul to seal the routes to the Islamic State-held town of Tal Afar and its territory in neighboring Syria, to prevent any retreat or reinforcement.

Bulletproof BMW Used to Rescue Dozens During ISIS Attack
In the ongoing war against ISIS in the Middle East, one Kurdish Peshmerga fighter put his life—and his BMW—on the line to protect a city against a terrorist attack.
Using an early-'90s armored BMW he purchased four months prior to the October 21 attack, a Peshmerga soldier named Ako Rahman rescued dozens of citizens wounded or trapped by snipers in Kirkuk—a city in the Kurdish controlled region of Iraq.

Using an early-'90s armored BMW he purchased four months prior to the October 21 attack, a Peshmerga soldier named Ako Rahman rescued dozens of citizens wounded or trapped by snipers in Kirkuk—a city in the Kurdish controlled region of Iraq.
"After we arrived at the scene, we saw many wounded individuals among the security forces and civilians and no one was able to approach them due to the IS snipers. Therefore we decided to help those wounded people since bullets could not penetrate my car," Rahman told Kurdish news outlet BasNews.
Over the course of the attack, which lasted several days, Rahman used his bulletproof sedan to transport 70 injured people to the hospital, encountering gunfire throughout the mission.
“There are marks from 50 to 60 bullets on the body of my car and many of them hit the front and the windshield of the car," Rahman told Kurdish news outlet Rudaw.
Governor Dr. Najmaldin Karim presented the Peshmerga fighter with an award of 500,000 Iraqi dinars ($385) on November 1. BMW reportedly wanted to honor Rahman a bit more for his bravery and sacrifice. The German auto manufacturer offered him a brand new BMW in exchange for the bullet ridden E32, which it planned on displaying on its corporate campus. He declined the offer and instead it would be given to Sulaymaniyah, a local Kurdish museum.

On Sunday, FBI Director James Comey declared for the second time that Hillary Clintoncommitted no crimes regarding her use of a private email server while she was Secretary of State. Unsurprisingly, the reaction to this news was a highly partisan one, and perhaps Comey did work some damage to the Clinton campaign (as was the main criticism of his poorly timed public announcement). We can only speculate about that until Tuesday ends.
Speaking of speculation, a conspiracy theory immediately popped up on Twitter after Comey issued his letter. The bureau took about a week to comb through 650,000 messages amid all of the unsavory flotsam that surely resides on Anthony Weiner’s laptop. This was a lighting fast result, but was it too speedy?
Trump enthusiast General Michael Flynn — who was last seen declaring that Mark Cubanwas “not a legitimate person” — questioned how Comey and his staff could possibly dig through an average of one email per second. He tweeted that this was “IMPOSSIBLE,” and “something does not jive.”

Black pastors issue urgent plea to voters at Sunday services
DETROIT (AP) — At Sunday services, in rallies and on social media, black pastors urged congregants to vote, hoping to inspire a late flood of African-American turnout that could help propel Democrat Hillary Clinton to victory in critical swing states on Tuesday.
In Detroit, a pastor spoke of voting and citizenship. In Philadelphia, the minister reminded congregants others had died for their chance to cast a ballot. The Rev.
